Bible Question: When Jesus said you will do greater things than I. Did he mean healing or spreading the Gosple? |
Bible Answer: Greetings JFM, I presume that you are speaking of John 14:12? Here is a little commentary on this verse, since we know that no servant is greater than his Master (John 13:16)... "14:12 greater works than these. Greater in extent (through the worldwide preaching of the gospel) and effect (the spiritual redemption and placing in the Body of Christ multitudes of people since the Day of Pentecost). These will be done through prayer in His name (v.13)." (1) "12-17: Greater works (of a more exalted nature because redemption is achieved) will be done by the believers through prayer (vv. 13,15), obedience (v. 15), and the Holy Spirit (Counselor, vv. 16,17)." (2) "14:12 greater works than these he will do. Jesus did not mean greater works in power, but in extent. They would become witnesses to all the world through the power of the indwelling and infilling of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8) and would bring many to salvation because of the Comforter dwelling in them. The focus is on spiritual rather than physical miracles. The book of Acts constitutes the beginning historical record of the impact that the Spirit-empowered disciples had on the world (cf. Acts 17:6)."
