Bible Question:
Thanks for the response, and all the helpful Scripture references, Rich-h-Him! You mentioned Jesus' temptation in the wilderness -- in that case, Satan actually spoke to Him aloud (if we read the text literally). But I don't believe I've ever heard Satan speaking audibly to me. So I was kinda wondering, does he just whisper really softly? Does he get "into my head" and put ideas there? Does he speak through other people, or influence their behavior for his own ends? If so, how would he get them to say and do things? Just wondering, --Cheryl |
Bible Answer: I think I can say with certainty that mere mortals would never merit a visit from Satan himself as did the Lord Jesus Christ. Satan has plenty of underlings to do his bidding and keep mankind busy. (Not that that lessens the threat any) Their goal is deception. Their goal is getting mankind to question what God has said. Gen 3:1 The first time we see Satan showing up, he is saying to Eve, "Now are you sure that's what God really said?" Refer back to my previous answer about temptation in the 3 areas: Yes, evil spirits, devils, (demons) will whisper in our ear and allure us through our eyes, through the desires of our body and play upon our pride to draw us away from the truth of what God has said. The scripture is also clear about the (spiritual) battlefield being played out for our minds (as our friend has given us verses out of 2Cor10:4 etc.) The battle believers face is to renew the mind Rom.12:1-2. Satan desires to keep the lost from ever believing the truth and becoming believers 2Cor4:4, and keep believers so busy wallowing with emotional problems, bad habits, and the such that God cannot use them to spread the truth. (Ephesians 4:17-27) This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, (18) Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: (19) Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. (20) But ye have not so learned Christ; (21) If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: (22) That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (23) And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; (24) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (25) Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. (26) Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: (27) Neither give place to the devil. Certainly other people can be used to spread the deception. Jesus and the apostle Paul warned us of that:(Matthew 7:15) Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (Colossians 2:8-10) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (9) For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. (10) And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Our defense is the Lord Jesus Christ. "If" we are in Him, and walk "with" Him, we will not fear the evil one. |
