Bible Question: I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE HISTORY OF PALM SUNDAY FOR MY CLASS ON SUNDAY, LIKE WHY PALMS? WHAT DOES THIS CELEBRATION MEAN INACCORDANCE TO EASTER.? |
Bible Answer: Heavenly father, In Catholic Churches on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter (Resurrection Sunday) the Gospel reading is taken from the passages about Jesus entry into Jerusalem the week before he was crucified. It is called Palm Sunday because in the Gospels of Matthwew and Mark it speaks of the people taking brances from Palm tress to wave in celbration as Jesus enter Jerusalem riding on the colt of an ass. It is also called Palm Sunday because on that day Palm brances are distributed in the Churches and used in procressions around the Church building and or grounds. See Matthew 21:1-11, especially verse 8. See also Mark 11:1-11, especially verse 8. See John 12:12-19, especially verse 13. See Luke 19:28-40 which describes the same triumphal entry, but does not emntion the Palm brances. See also 1 Kings 1:37-40. An interesting side note is that the ashes used on Ash Wednesday are made from the ashes of burnt Palm branches from the previous year's Palm branches. Emmaus |
