Bible Question: Was the woman who poured perfume from the alabaster jar onto Jesus's feet Mary Magdalene? Or was she the woman who Jesus saved from being stoned? Or is she either?? I am curious to know!! |
Bible Answer: The woman that poured oil on Jesus was Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus. John 12:1-3 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. [2] There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. [3] Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. Mary Magdalene is referenced in Luke 8:2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities--Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, Many think the woman in Luke 7:37-38 was Mary Magdalene but the text only indentifies the woman as once a prostitute. While Mary Magdalene had 7 demons nowhere is there a connection to her and prostitution so it is highly unlikely this is Mary Magdalene. EdB |
