Bible Question: Is the glory of God, the same as the presence of God? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Smithski! John 11:4 mentions the "glory of God", and so does John 7:39, 12:41 and 13:31-32. The above verses in their respective context include the salvation that is provided for us by Jesus' death and resurrection within the overall reference of "the glory of God." However, "the presence of God" is mentioned in many places, including Luke 1:19, 1 Thess. 1:3; 5:21, and Hebrews 9:24. By examining these passages and comparing them with the passages that dealt with the "glory of God", we can gain a better frame of reference as to where the differences between "the glory of God" and "the presence of God" lie. Both "the glory of God" and "the presence of God" are reflective of God's glory, but "the glory of God" has more to do with how God is glorified, and in most cases in the New Testament, this has to do with Jesus Christ. The "presence of God" is also glorious, but it could come to mean various things. For instance, Paul could say "I charge you in the presence of God", or the writer of Hebrews could describe how Jesus is our Advocate in the "presence of God" the Father.. There are also verses in the OT like 2 Chronicles 5:11-14, which add someting extra to the meaning of "the glory of God." Blessings to you, Makarios |
