Subject: Mary and Martha |
Bible Note: Of Mary and Martha, Martha always seems to get the lesser reputation! :-) Jesus stayed at their house and enjoyed their company (Matthew 21:17; Luke 10:38-42; John 11,12). When Jesus visits them the first time, Martha is the one who is distracted with preparing the meal while Mary listens at the Lord's feet (Luke 10:38-42), even though it was Martha who invited Him into their home (v. 38). When Jesus visits them again, due to their brother Lazarus's death, both Mary and Martha say, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died." (John 11:21,32) Jesus Himself wept (John 11:35). But Jesus reassures Martha (v.23), and she makes her testimony of faith to Jesus (v. 27). Mary anoints Jesus's feet with a very costly perfume (12:1-3), and Judas Iscariot says, "Why this waste?" (12:5; Matthew 26:8; Mark 14:4). In conclusion, if we look at Mary and Martha together, we can tell that they were both truly devoted to their Lord and Savior! - Makarios |
