Bible Question: Did Jesus say the words recorded at John 10:1-21 at the feast of tabernacles or at feast of dedication? (John 10:22) Please provide Scriptural proof or proof from a commentary. I know John 7:1-9:31 was at the tabernacle feast; and I know 10:22 onwards was at the dedication feast. What about John 10:1-21? Is this a continuation of the discussion in Chapter 9, or not? |
Bible Answer: Papius, I am inclined to consider the Good Shepherd discourse as related to the Feast of the Dedication because after verse 22 announcing the feast, the theme of the Good Shepherd is continued in verse 27. The Good Shepherd theme is not a part of the earlier scene with the blind man who was given sight. Light (sight) was associated with Tabernacles. Lambs that were sacrificed (John 10:17-18)are more associated with the Temple. Also of interest is that the Potico of Solomom is on the east side of the Temple and from it could likely be seen the nearby Sheep Gate of Jerusalem in the Northeast wall of the city. Jesus speaks of Himself as the sheep gate. John has a habit of telling a story just before he announces what feat it is. See the sequence following this one and you see that the raising of Lazarus immediately precceds Jesus' triumphant entry into Jeruisalem the very next day. Just before announced the feast of Tabernacles there is the story of the unbelief of Jesus' brethren. Then Jesus immediately goes up to Jerusalem right after them, after telling them He was going to remain behind. Emmaus |
