AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 10:16 "I have other sheep [beside these] that are not of this fold. I must bring those also, and they will listen to My voice and pay attention to My call, and they will become one flock with one Shepherd. [Ezek 34:23; Eph 2:13-18] |
Subject: The Shepherd |
Bible Note: Does anyone have a comment on this? John 10:3 "and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out" An initial hearing of the shepherd’s voice as He calls us out. This is salvation, and does not necessarily speak of action that continues past the “putting them forth” (vs. 4a). The hearing of the shepherd’s voice by the sheep, his calling them, and leading them out, results in the sheep being “put forth”. Therefore, the hearing, calling, and leading contribute towards that as an end result, and do not necessarily continue past that point. 10:16 they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock, one Shepherd. Again, hearing contributes towards joining the flock as its result, and does not necessarily continue past that time. Turning to the other to passages that do not follow this same pattern: 4 the sheep follow (pres act ind) him because they know (perfect act ind form, present function) his voice. We could say that the sheep have learned the shepherd’s voice, so now knowing it, they follow him. This verse implies that the sheep are following the shepherd’s voice, in that it’s his voice they know. The further implication is that they are currently hearing his voice. 27 My sheep hear (pres act ind 3rd person sing) My voice, and I know them, and they follow (pres act ind 3rd person plural) Me. Again, this is a current “hearing” (individually hearing - very interesting!), and current “following”. From a purely grammatical exegesis, I would conclude that Jesus is teaching that He leads His sheep vocally, as the shepherd of His illustration does, in an ongoing fashion. 16 And I have other sheep which are not of this fold. I must also lead those, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock, one Shepherd. This verse gives as an historical perspective. Since we are examining an historical narrative containing didactic passages, we need to know if this teaching is intended generally for the reader of the book, or if the teaching was directed specifically towards Jesus’ historical audience. Jesus was talking to the Pharisees (9:40). He spoke this allegory to them (10:6). He told this allegory to explain (A) why His people follow Him (10:3-5), and (B) why others do not follow Him (10:26-27). These were things that were currently, literally, happening. Many people were following Jesus, and many weren’t. In the midst of this teaching, Jesus said, “And I have other sheep which are not of this fold. I must also lead those, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock, one Shepherd.” This now introduces a contrast between those currently following Jesus who were of “this fold”, and those who would in the future follow Jesus who were “not of this fold”. This leads me to think that Jesus spoke these things refering to those who were following Him during His earthly ministry, and the others who were not following Him, as distinguished from those who would follow Him in the future. So the present tense ‘hearing’ and ‘following’ would refer to His contemporary Jews, and the future tense ‘hearing’ in vs. 16 would refer to the gentiles subsequent to His earthly ministry. Verse 16, which would then be the portion specifically directed towards us, speaks of the hearing of His voice which results in salvation. I would then conclude that this passage does not teach that we continue to hear Jesus’ voice, following the same, as a continuing part of our life following salvation. As I consider this in view of the general teaching of the Bible, I cannot think of any Scripture that would be in conflict with this. John 16:13-14 “But when that One comes, the Spirit of Truth, He will guide you into all Truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will announce the coming things to you. That One will glorify Me, for He will receive from Mine and will announce to you.” This passage teaches us that the Holy Spirit will be the One to communicate to us, even proclaiming that which is from the Son. 1 Cor 2 10 “But God revealed them to us by His Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the things of a man, except the spirit of a man within him? So also no one has known the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 But we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit from God, so that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God. 13 Which things we also speak, not in words taught in human wisdom, but in Words taught of the Holy Spirit, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things.” Again, the Holy Spirit is the One Who communicates with us.
