Bible Question:
In John 1:47-51 Jesus told Nathanael "I saw ou while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you" After which Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God: you are the King of Israel." The question: What is the significance of Jesus seeing Nathanael under the fig tree? And why was it so powerfull that it instantly convinced Nathanael that Jesus was the Son of God? Was there some ritual or something about sitting under a fig tree? |
Bible Answer: Hi pineska, Welcome to the forum. I don't recognize the version that you quoted from in your question. One can find many references in the Bible about sitting under the fig tree. See 1Kings 4:25, 2 Kings 18:31, Isaiah 36:16. I like to think that Nathaniel was thinking about the Scriptures and praying while under his fig tree. Perhaps thinking of the peace and prosperity that would come when the King arrives. I compare John 1:48 with Micah 4:4 and Zechariah 4:10. John 1:48, "Nathanael said to Him, 'How do You know me?" (Jesus) answered and said to him, 'Before Phillip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Zechariah 3:10, "'In that day,' declares the (Lord) of hosts, 'every on of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and under his fig tree.'" Micah 4:3, "And (He) will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they train for war, And each of them will sit under is vine And under his fig tree, With no one to make them afraid, For the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken." He is the King of Israel. Micah 4:7, "I will make the lame a remnant, And the outcasts a strong nation, And the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion From now on and forever." From the heart, Ray |
