NASB | John 1:21 They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he *said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 1:21 They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." "Are you the [promised] Prophet?" And he answered, "No." [Deut 18:15, 18; Mal 4:5] |
Bible Question: who is "the Prophet"? |
Bible Answer: Either Jeremiah, who some of the Jews thought was spoken of in Deuteronomy 18:15, who would preceed the Messiah; or one of the "prophets of old" risen from the dead (Luke 9:8). John denies being any of the prophets of the Old Testament, nor was he like them. He was a prophet and more than just a prophet (see Matthew 11:9). |
