Bible Question: Why Mat 17:12-13 said John the Baptist is Elijah? |
Bible Answer: Ivory313 -- Look at Matt. 11:14 "he is Elijah" i.e., John the Baptist is the fulfillment of Mal.4:5,6. The Jews were of course aware that Elijah had not died (2 Kings 2:11), but this does not suggest that John was in fact Elijah, for in John 1:21 he states clearly that he was not. Still and all, John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah (Luke 1:17). So the passage is saying that John came in the spirit and power of Elijah, though certainly not a reincarnation of Elijah. --Hank |
