Bible Question: Hi, such a blessing to find this site! In luke 8:39 after jesus has healed the man of his demons he tells him to not leave with jesus but to stay and tell his family aboutall god has done for him. Comparing this to luke 8:56 when jesus brings back to life the young girl he tells the family to not tell anyone what happened. Why the difference? |
Bible Answer: Hi Sally, Jesus sent this formerly demon-possessed man out to proclaim the good news of what Jesus had done. There was also a time that He sent His disciples out to proclaim the gospel (Matt 10, for example). But as you said, there were other times that Jesus told people to not tell. There was one time recorded that the one healed did tell, and Jesus couldn't go back into the cities because He would get so mobbed (Mark 1:45). Without being given greater detail in the Scripture, we can only conjecture, but I think we can safely say that it was because the results of them telling what had happened would conflict with His ministry, whether it be a premature proclaimation of His Messiahship, or simply that He would have been overrun with people while there was a shy one in the corner He was being sent to. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
