Subject: Who is greater than John the Baptist? |
Bible Note: Hey there Steve, There are some interesting interpretations of this verse.. "7:28 That which has come with Jesus is so much greater than that which has been in the old order, that anyone who has experienced the new has advantages and spiritual privileges beyond those of even the greatest of the old order, to which John the Baptist belongs. The permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit provides a totally new dimension for Christians living in the new dispensation. Consequently, the Christian who is least in the kingdom of God has remarkable potentialities and responsibilities which no O.T. saint was able to enjoy." (Believer's Study Bible) "The Church, God’s Kingdom—Greatness in God’s kingdom is determined by humility, faith, and trust. See note on Mt 18:1-4. John exhibited these qualities, but Jesus referred to John the Baptist as the end of an era. John did not live to see the triumph of Jesus over sin and death at the cross. This event marked the beginning of God’s reign in a unique way." (Disciple's Study Bible) "he who is least in the kingdom of God: Jesus emphasizes the contrast between the old and new eras. John was the greatest prophet ever born. But the lowest person in the new era of God’s kingdom is higher than the greatest prophet of the old era." (Nelson Study Bible) "11:11 is greater than he. The greatness of John the Baptist in the old dispensation of the law before the Cross fades in comparison to the high position every believer has had since Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection and the descent of the Spirit." (From Matthew 11:11, Ryrie's Study Bible) This verse (Luke 7:28) has always intrigued me and it is interesting to see the interpretations behind it. --Nolan |
