Bible Answer: Dear Maearl, We are to live by every word of God. Men were meant to be directed always and continually by God. We know this because that is how God dealt with Adam before the fall. Even man in his sinless, perfect state needed to be told who he was, why he existed, what and how he was to do the tasks God gave to him. I suspect that your frustration arises from only being exposed to a superficial study of theological terms. Ours is day that chooses to leave words only vaguely defined, apparently in an effort to minimize disagreement in order to promote unity. In terms of hermeneutics, you might want to come to grips with the many details behind the phrases like "Scripture interprets Scripture." It will likely continue to seem nonsensical until you invest the time effort needed to understand the foundations on which these principles are grounded. Only then will you find yourself equipped to be a more effective critic of the teaching of others. Since God has carefully provided us with very specific language, men of faith have invested enormous amounts of time in the study of the Word. I can think of no other study that warrants our time and attention. Imagine! The creator of this entire universe, one who is infinitely wise, and infinitely holy, has deigned to give men a message! If a message were transmitted to the earth from interstellar space, wouldn't we invest time and effort in understanding its every nuance? How far more important is this message we have from one who determines our eternal destiny! I suggest that you begin with a book like "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth" by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart. In Him, Doc |
