Bible Question: RE; baptism--why were people going to John to be baptised? The old test. says the priests were to be cleansed but the general population were to be circumcised. Why were people coming to be baptised?--angel1 |
Bible Answer: Amazingly, the question raised in the verse, Luke 3:3, is also answered in the same verse. Luke 3:3 Amplified And he went into all the country round about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance (of hearty amending of their ways, with abhorrence of past wrongdoing) unto the forgiveness of sin. New Living Translation Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had turned from their sins and turned to God to be forgiven A baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins was a call for preparation for the arrival of the Lord's salvation. To participate in this baptism was a recognition of the need for God's forgiveness with a sense that one needed to live differently as a response to it (Luke 3:10-14).
