Bible Question: All of the Old Testament prophecies and references in the New Testament refer to Jesus (or the Messiah) as being descended from the line of Abraham and David. However, in Matthew 1-16 His lineage traces to Joseph not Mary. Since Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, there would be no blood connection to those Old Testament patriarchs. How is this justified? |
Bible Answer: You are correct the Matthew lineage traces Jesus lineage back to Abraham through Solomon and is the lineage of Joseph. This is called the Royal lineage. In Jewish culture the accepted stepson is given the inheritance rights of the his stepfather. So this lineage shows Jesus was of the House of David. Luke chapter 3 lists another lineage this one back to Abraham only through Nathan the righteous son of David. This lineage is believed to be of Mary's father and shows the blood connection to David and Abraham. |
