Bible Question:
Based on Romans 13, should Christians offer absolute deference to the government to the point of refraining from pointing out the sinfulness of personal actions of governmental officials, i.e., ignore the sexual exploits of former President Clinton and Senator Condit? I've been engaged in an e-mail debate with the author of an inflamatory book on the subject (who would go so far to say that Christians should avoid voting since God appoints governmental leaders), and would like some input from fellow believers. Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks, koinekid Upholding Scriptural Accuracy, Integrity, Immutability, and Relevancy: Working toward the glory of God and the salvation of man. |
Bible Answer: Welcome koinekid- I'm not positive on this, but I don't believe the general public had a voice in who led the government at that time. And yet, even then, Jesus gave us the words to give unto Caesar the things that are Caeser's and Paul restated that by telling us in Romans to pay taxes and obey the government (Roman 13:7). However, when the government gives us an order that is in direct opposition to what the Word of God tells us (Acts 5:27-29), we have a mandate to disobey. In our country, our government is chosen by the people. If after prayerful reveiw of the candidates and I believe seeing how their character and actions line up with God's Word, it is our responsibility to act with the freedom given to us and the wisdom given to us to vote for the one whom we believe will bring this country more in line with the guidelines God has set up. If an official is not doing what Jesus would do, we also are within our rights to tell it like it is. But we also have been told to pray for our leaders. God does appoint them,(I believe God put Clinton in office, just as much as Bush) and they will serve God's purpose for being there. Clinton's exploits caused this nation to ask itself "does character count?" and I don't know of an election where more people got down on their knees and prayed for God's will to be done. This past president caused people to eveluate where their allegiances are. And I would dare to say, no other president has had so many people praying for him to act in God's wisdom as G.W.Bush. This got a little off the subject, but I also look at John the Baptist who pointed out that one of the government officials (Luke 3:18)had acted immorally. Of course, he was also imprisoned for it and lost his head. It is a good thing that doesn't happen in this country, right? Debbie |
