Bible Question: Can women preach? |
Bible Answer: That depends on what you mean by "preach." Every believer is commanded to tell others about the grace of God. Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. If you are talking about Pastoral type preaching, Paul tells Timothy to not let a woman have authority over a man and that the women were to learn in silence. He also refers it back to the beginning of time. 1Ti 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 1Ti 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 1Ti 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 1Ti 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. I have discussed this with a woman before that said she was a preacher. She said that the women that were to be silent were the married women, so that didn’t apply to her because she was single. I ran a reference using a concordance on prophetess and found that all of them, but one, were married. The one was not mentioned being married or not. I have more study to do on Prophetesses, but from my understanding, I don’t believe they were over a congregation. Paul wrote the instructions for the church, though the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, after Prophetess are mentioned, so I am not sure if Prophetess even apply to us now. Paul also told Timothy that a Bishop (Pastor) is to be the husband of one wife, which would rule out a woman. 1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; I hope this has been helpful to you. Keep on growing in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. |
