Bible Question: Is there a difference between HEAVEN mentioned in REV 21:4 1 COR 15:35-57 2 COR 5:1-10 and PARADISE mentioned in LUKE 23:43. ARE THESE TWO DIFFERENT PLACES? |
Bible Answer: Paradise is an old Persian term which literally means "wooded park." It is used in the OT to refer to King Artaxerxes' forest [Neh.2:8]. Twice it is used in reference to orchards, in Eccl.2:5 and Song of Sol.4:13. In the NT [Luke 23:43; 2 Cor.12:4, and Rev.2:7] Paradise is used to refer to the eternal abode of the righteous; thus, Paradise and Heaven are synonymous. The Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) used "Paradise" to translate the Hebrew words for the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2 and 3. In Jewish theology, the opposite place for the wicked, the place we call "hell," is gehenna, which means "a burning furnace." --Hank |
