Bible Question:
Could you please explain to me this? Then they will begin to say to the mountains" Fall on us":to the hills. "Cover us?". For if men use the green wood like this, what will happen when it is dry? |
Bible Answer: Dear Sunam, The passage you are asking about is: But turning to them Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us,' and to the hills, 'Cover us.' For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?" (Luke 23:28-31 ESV) In this passage Christ is prophesying regarding the diaspora that will take place in just a few decades from this time. During the siege of Jerusalem they would be running here and there seeking some kind of refuge. Jesus uses the proverb of the green and dry wood to emphasize that if such atrocious things could be done to one who is completely innocent, what horrid things will they then do to those who have rejected the visitation of the Lord!
