Bible Question: What does 'sleeping from sorrow' mean? What sorrow were they sleeping from? |
Bible Answer: Greetings again, prayon.. The Believer's Study Bible states, "22:45 “Sleeping from sorrow” means that the disciples are exhausted from the emotional demands made by the prophecy of Jesus’ death and the difficult future facing them." The New Scofield Study Bible suggests, "'Sleeping' Peter was sleeping while his Master was praying (v. 45), and resisting while his Master was submitting (vv. 49-51; cp. John 18:10). He followed at a distance (v. 54), sat down among his Lord’s enemies (v. 55), and denied the Lord, the faith, and the brotherhood (vv. 57, 58, 60)." The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible comments, "'sleeping from sorrow.' Cf. 9:32. The emotional strain was wearing on the disciples as well as Christ. Their response, however, was to capitulate to fleshly cravings. Thus they gratified their immediate desire for sleep, rather than staying awake to pray for strength, as Christ had commanded them (v. 40). All the reasons for their subsequent failure are found in their behavior in the garden." Good study! Nolan |
