Bible Question: Why did he want to sift Peter? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Child of God2, BradK gave a good answer! I have found a few comments to add as there are many things to expound upon in this verse.. "[31] Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, [32] but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers." (Luke 22:31-32 - New American Bible) Compare with NLT - "sift each of you" or NRSV - "sift all of you" / contrast with NKJV/NASB/HCSB/ESV/NIV - "may sift you as wheat" ESV footnote: "[1] The Greek word for you (twice in this verse) is plural; in verse 32, all four instances are singular" Related passages: Gen. 3:1; Job 1:6-12; Amos 9:9; Luke 22:40; John 8:44, 17:9,15, 21:15; Heb. 4:15; James 1:14; 1 Peter 5:8; Rev. 20:10 'sift' - Strongs 4617 Gr. - siniazo -verb: to sift, shake in a sieve: - sift [1] 'wheat' - Strongs 4621 Gr. - sitos -noun: wheat, grain: - wheat [12], corn [2] Commentary: "22:31 Simon, Simon. The repetition of the name (cf. 10:41; Acts 9:4) implied an earnest and somber tone of warning. Christ Himself had given Simon the name Peter (6:14), but here He reverted to his old name, perhaps to intensify His rebuke about Peter's fleshly over-confidence. The context also suggests that Peter may have been one of the more vocal participants in the dispute of v. 24. Satan has asked for you. Though addressed specifically to Peter, this warning embraced the other disciples as well. The pronoun "you" is plural in the Gr. text. sift you as wheat. The imagery is apt. It suggests that such trials, though unsettling and undesirable, have a necessary refining effect." (1) "22:32 I have prayed for you. The pronoun "you" is singular ... Although it is clear that He prayed for all of them (John 17:6-19), He personally assured Peter of His prayers and of Peter's ultimate victory, even encouraging Peter to be an encourager to the others. that your faith should not fail. Peter himself failed miserably, but his faith was never overthrown (cf. John 21:18,19)." (1) "22:31 wheat. Peter was, as it were, the wheat; his self-confidence, the chaff. Compare John 5:24; 10:28; Rom. 6:1-2; 1 John 1:8; 2:1." (2) "22:31,32 Satan wanted to crush Simon Peter and the other disciples like grains of wheat. He hoped to find only chaff and blow it away. But Jesus assured Peter that his faith, although it would falter, would not be destroyed. It would be renewed, and Peter would become a powerful leader." (3) "22, 31: All of you: literally, "you." The translation reflects the meaning of the Greek text that uses a second person plural pronoun here." (4) "22, 31-32: Jesus' prayer for Simon's faith and the commission to strengthen his brothers anticipates the post-resurrectional prominence of Peter in the first half of Acts, where he appears as the spokesman for the Christian community and the one who begins the mission to the Gentiles (Acts 10-11)." (4) My commentary (Makarios): Satan no doubt was out to destroy the mission of Jesus and His disciples through any means he could find, including appealing to God (much like Job) and tempting them at "an opportune time" (Luke 4:13). Even though Satan is asking to test all of them, Jesus is squarely speaking to Peter, whether through Peter's assumed weakness (denying Him three times) or his later assumed leadership, we are not sure which (or perhaps both). But we do know that the Lord had prayed for Peter, specifically, that he would not fall completely out of the faith due to his failure (denied Jesus three times), but his faith be later restored, as it would later be (John 21:15-19).
