Bible Question:
In Luke 18:19 Jesus says, (I am paraphrasing) Why do you call me good, no one is good except God alone. I am a firm believer in Christ, but I have read up on this question but i cannot find an answer. Why would Jesus say this? Is he not putting himself as inferior to God in this instance? |
Bible Answer: Luke 18:19 THE RICH YOUNG RULER AND DISCOURSE THEREON. (Luke 18:18-30) Why, etc.--Did our Lord mean then to teach that God only ought to be called "good?" Impossible, for that had been to contradict all Scripture teaching, and His own, too (Psalms 112:5; Matthew 25:21; Titus 1:8). Unless we think this is to just to confuse us, He could have had but one object--to raise the youth's ideas of Himself, as not to be classed merely with other "good masters," and declining to receive this title apart from the "One" who is essentially and only "good." (perfect) Nothing worldly is “good” compared to Spiritual “Perfection.” Jesus was in the flesh (subject to same temptations as man) God is good and God is grace but Jesus was separate from his Father-Mortal. And since Eden-no one can be “Good Teacher” because of our sin nature |
