Bible Question:
In Phillipians 2:1-4 Paul says regard one another as more important than yourselves; and do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. He goes on to give us our Lord Jesus as an example who will ultimately have every knee bowed to Him. It is somewhat confusing in that we are suppose to think of other more important but with the ultimate outcome of being greater... it is almost like we have an alterer motive .. to be lifted up we have to "act" humble |
Bible Answer: Hi, refump... Welcome to the forum! The words of Scripture all have a specific historical and grammatical context. We humans have a natural bent which seeks self-promotion, a root motive our hearts; i.e., we have a masters mindset. Instead, we are to adopt of servants mindset. Consequently, the words are addressed to people with a master mindset, helping us to understand the servants mindset, a fundamental characteristic of our Savior. Scripture never calls us to simply act out its commands. Rather, it calls us to a change of root motivations of the heart. A radical change to the fundamental nature of the heart (Luke 6:43-45), something only God can effect in us. Even in the passage you cited, Paul is giving us a mandate of attitude. Fruit is always a manifestation of a plant's DNA (Matthew 7:16-20). Our external behavior is always a visible manifestation of internal realities. Therefore, if these things are true to us, then our actions will be consistent with that belief. In Him, Doc |
