Bible Question:
What is the place of torment in Luke 16:27? Is this hell? Or a pre Hell. Is this purgatory? |
Bible Answer: The parable of Luke 16:19-31 is the story of Hades. Hades is seen by the Jew of the time as the holding place of the dead. We know the final place of the wicked dead is the Lake of Fire. To the Jew of the time Hades the resting place of the Jew was divided into two sections. A hot dry place and Abrahams Bosom or Paradise. We know that upon his death Jesus descended into Hades and preached the truth to those in Abraham's bosom. Jesus then lead them to heaven. Eph 4:8. The Abraham's Bosom side of Hades is now empty, however the hot dry place still has souls awaiting their final judgement at the great white throne. The Catholic idea of purgatory may have been formed by this, but scripture does not give any indication that those held in the hot dry place are later transferred to heaven. Hebrews 9:27 tells us man must die once then go into judgement. No where is mentioned that man will get a second chance after death. Further 2 Cor 5:8 tells us to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. This of course is speaking righteous dead. |
