Bible Question:
Where did the jewish people go to before Jesus to give them the way for ascention to the father? In Luke abrahams bosom is mentioned but I am still unclear? Was this just a parable? Where did people go? |
Bible Answer: While many people consider the story of Abraham's bosom in Luke 16 a parable, that was the basic understanding of the Jews. This teaching can be found in pre and post Christ Jewish literature and is the essence of the their teaching on life after death. Therefore for Jesus to use this same understanding in a parable if it weren't valid would be in effect confirming a false teaching. I don't think that would be something Jesus would do. Most Bible scholars consider the story in Luke 16 an accurate picture of pre Christ Hades. This seems to be confirmed by Eph 4:8 where an Old Testament quote is used saying He lead captivity captive. In other words Jesus ascended on high taking with those held captive by death in Hades (Abraham’s bosom) to heaven. See Psalm 68:18 and Col 2:15. What took place upon His death Jesus descended into Hades (which is translated hell in many cases) . He went to the Abraham’s bosom side of it as picture in Luke 16:19 –31 and preached the “Good News” (1 Peter 3:19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,) and lead the Old Testament saints to Heaven. Paul tells us in 2 Cor 5:6-8 that when a New Testament Saint dies he goes directly into the presence of the Lord to await the resurrection of his body which will instantly transformed 1 Cor. 15:53-54 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. [54] So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." EdB |
