AMPLIFIED 2015 | Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God]--he cannot be My disciple. |
Bible Question: why do I have to hate my family and myself before Jesus will teach me.Isn't a disciple like a student? |
Bible Answer: Greetings! To understand this passage you must take the emotion out of the word hate. This would be a contradiction of His command to love one another! What Christ is calling for here is complete surrender. "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." Mt 6:24 Luke 18:18-23 is an illustration of this principle. The ruler chose his wealth (which is anything that takes the rightful place of God in our lives, "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me" !) Jesus tells us to love one another, but HE wants to be first place in our lives. Remember what the greatest commandment is? See Mt 22:36-40. When we love Him with all of our being, the love for others will be a reflection of His love though us! The circle of God's love is complete when we accept God's love, love Him back and love others. A Christ follower is a disciple, but not all disciples are Christ followers. Mt 7:13-29 May God's Word bless you as you learn and follow . . . mommapbs |
