Bible Question: summarize luke 14:13 |
Bible Answer: Greetings Aries, Luke 14:13 "But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind." (NKJV) Here is some interesting commentary regarding the context of this verse: "14:12 do not ask your friends, your brothers. Clearly this is not to be taken as an absolute prohibition against inviting friends or relatives to a meal. Christ employed similar hyperbole in v. 26. Such language is common in Semitic discourse and is used for emphasis. His point here is that inviting one's friends and relatives cannot be classified as a spiritual act of true charity. It may also be a rebuke against those prone to reserve their hospitality for "rich neighbors" who they know will feel obligated to return the favor. Cf. Deut. 14:28,29." (1) "14, 7-14: The banquet scene found only in Luke provides the opportunity for these teachings of Jesus on humility and presents a setting to display Luke's interest in Jesus' attitude toward the rich and the poor.." (2) "14:13-14 Such acts of kindness showed the fruit of a righteous life and will be rewarded in the future time of resurrection." (3) All three commentaries above, although commenting from differing perspectives, provide true and accurate insights in regards to this verse. The human author, Luke, is giving us an example of what Jesus meant regarding true kindness and humility; that we should freely give to others without any thought of receiving back what we give. "For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?" (Matthew 5:46, NASB) Jesus also says, "For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me." (Matthew 25:35-36). By following the example of kindness and humility given by Jesus, we will be showing love toward one another and help spread the gospel of Christ.
