Bible Note: Whew, oh no! Not me! I know I'm not up to dealing with "whatever the Lord might throw at me." I have barely been able to endure what little tiny things (comparatively) that He has seen fit to send my way. (Sorry, I won't rise to the bait regarding the authoriship of Hebrews! Too little data and too much speculation. But, between you and me, I think it wasn't Paul, but someone he knew well.) I love the promise in Hebrews 12 that our suffering will eventually yield "the peaceable fruit of righteousness" (verse 11). Often I could do nothing by cling to that promise. I remember teaching my son things. When the lightbulb finally came on and he understood what I was after, it would delight me when he would apply the principles to things I hadn't even talked to him about yet. I sense a bit of this in the middle of Hebrews 12. Imagine, if I can only judge myself (1 Cor 11:31) and apply the Word to my effort toward holiness (Heb 12:14), maybe God wouldn't have to chasten me! :-) |
