Bible Question: i want to know what jesus meant in verses luke 12;49-53 |
Bible Answer: Greetings Dranilfonseca! The question of the meaning of "fire" in v. 49 is greatly disputed. However, I think the overall meaning of the passage is clear. The result of Christ's coming will not result in peace, but in division. There will be divisions between those who accept Christ and those who reject Christ, even within families. Historically, we know this to be true. Fire usually refers to judgement in Scripture. For instance, John said in Mt. 3:11-12: "‘‘I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” " Thus, the coming of Christ will be for both forgiveness and judgement. This is what I think Luke 12:49 refers to. But, based upon v. 50, it seems that the focus of the judgement is the Cross. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
