Bible Question: What does this verse mean? |
Bible Answer: Hi, It seems this verse is best understood when taking into consideration the surrounding text. From verse 40 - 46 gives the bigger picture. Jesus is telling His disciples of one who was not faithful and diligent in his duties. Consequently, that one's underlings were adversely affected by his failure to continue on in his master's charge. This man (or woman) was a part of the body of Christ and the body having many parts is still one body. If the little toe stops doing its job then the whole body suffers. What is the job of your little toe? To support the foot so then in turn the foot may support the leg and so on and so on. We all have responsibilities in our positions in the body if we are born-again. No matter who you are, there are those above you and those below. The one who submits to authority is the one who gains it. When a husband submits to God, then his wife respects him and supports him and in turn their children then submit to the wife who submited to the husband who submited to God. When one does not submit to their authority it throws everything out of wack. The passage also states the penalty for such abuses. Of course this is subject to the time at which this behavior is exposed. If one is backsliden then so long as the Master does not return and catch him in that state he has a valid chance to confess his transgression and return to the way he should be acting and therefore receive once again right standing with God. BUT, if the master does return and catches that servant in that state of disobediance then he will be assigned a place with the unbelievers. In Christ, Chad K. |
