Bible Question: Can a born again christian stand in proxy and forgive sins? |
Bible Answer: No. Never. Prayon is absolutely right. The model prayer that Jesus taught His disciples clearly teaches them to pray to God for their own forgiveness for their own sins. It does not teach that believers have the power to forgive sins, neither their own nor those of anyone else. What it does teach is that in order to be forgiven of our sins, we must forgive those (but not the sins of those) who sin against us. Scripture commands that we forgive the sinner but it never empowers us to forgive the sin itself.... In the story of the paralytic whom Jesus both healed and forgave [See Luke 5:17-26], the scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of blasphemy on the grounds that no one can forgive sins but God alone. This would, of course, have been blasphemy, and the Jewish leaders would have been justified in their accusation, had not Jesus been who He said He was. But since he was indeed God Incarnate, this "Son of man" as He was so fond of calling Himself, said to the paralytic (v.20) "Man, your sins are forgiven you." Then, to the charge of blasphemy brought on Him by the scribes and Pharisees, (v.21), Jesus asked them (vss.22,23) "Which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Rise up and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins" -- He said to the man who was paralyzed, "I say to you, arise, take up your bed and go to your house." The Christian does not need a priest to whom to confess his sin and the priest has no power to forgive sin. Jesus is our High Priest, He is our intercessor, and through Him we petition God for the forgiveness of our sins. But the warning that follows the so-called Lord's Prayer, the model prayer of Matthew 6:9-13, is worthy to be indelibly etched in our hearts and minds and recalled every time we go to God in prayer. From Matthew 6:14,15, here are the words the Lord Jesus spoke: "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." Again, let me stress that it is a command that we forgive others, but this does not empower us to forgive their sins against God. It is they who must confess their sins to God and it is God alone who is able to forgive them of those sins. --Hank |
