AMPLIFIED 2015 | Luke 10:19 "Listen carefully: I have given you authority [that you now possess] to tread on serpents and scorpions, and [the ability to exercise authority] over all the power of the enemy (Satan); and nothing will [in any way] harm you. |
Subject: what are the serpents and scorpions |
Bible Note: That is an interesting verse. I'm not sure how to read it. Like this: I have given you authority to tread on 1. serpents 2. scorpions 3. over all the power of the enemy Or should it read: I have given you authority 1. to tread on serpents and scorpions 2. over all the power of the enemy The word "and" is the same Greek word. The commentators I've checked seem to think it is both (A) literal (as in Mark 16:18 and Acts 28:5) and (B) metaphorical signifying the human and supernatural powers that will oppose the disciples. My leaning is to take it at face value as you have. However, verse 18 and 20 seem that he is talking about something other than the natural world. After all, he said 18-20 in response to the disciples statement in verse 17. Would you mind elucidating a bit more? In Him, Doc |
