NASB | Luke 10:19 "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Luke 10:19 "Listen carefully: I have given you authority [that you now possess] to tread on serpents and scorpions, and [the ability to exercise authority] over all the power of the enemy (Satan); and nothing will [in any way] harm you. |
Bible Question: is 'tread on serpents and scorpions' literal? or symbolic? if symbolic what is the symbolism? |
Bible Answer: Martimi, in the context I'd say it is symbolic, by the context. Verse 17 - The 72 returned and said that the demons submitted to them, in His name. Then Jesus gave the reason: -Satan's fall indicates his defeat (vs 18) -I see tread on serpents and scorpions and nothing will injure you being the symbolism over all the power of the enemy (vs 19) In verse 20 He says not to rejoice what happened on earth, but that they are going to heaven. I could see it being literal, based on Mark 16:17-18. These promises probably are limited in time and who it is for. Tho there are churches that believe it is for today. However, snake and scorpion handling is also copied by the world and Satan. Steve |
