Bible Question: Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, is related to Mary, mother of Jesus. Does anyone know their relation? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Malspa! Although this verse is not specific about their relationship, I suspect that Elizabeth was an older cousin or an aunt to Mary. Since she was described as old and barren, we might conclude that Elizabeth was more a contemporary to Mary's parents. I find it interesting that Mary went to stay with Elizabeth after she heard the angel's news! Since the angel told her about Elizabeth's pregnancy, do you think that God knew that Mary might have had some niggling doubts about her visitation and that by "checking out" the angel's announcement, Mary would be encouraged in her faith? I suspect that Mary believed but that she also needed some confirmation, and the angel gave her the means to receive it. I believe that God continues to do this for us and our weak faith today! I find great encouragement in this, for indeed, God knows our frame, He remembers that we are but dust dollies(Ps 103:14). Blessings on your day! mommapbs |
