Bible Question: Is it not true that publishing companys are becoming richer on the back of our carnal desire to have new products (English Bible Versions)? on a regular basis. |
Bible Answer: John, it's an incontrovertible axiom of business that the more widgets (Bibles, bubble gum, or balloons) a firm sells the more profits it will likely make. But I would stop short of saying that Bible publishers pander to our "carnal desires" -- albeit they do tend to exert no small effort to lure us into thinking that their newest is the best, and their latest is the most accurate, most readable edition of the Bible in the history of the world. But no seasoned reader, whether he's considering the purchase of a sacred or secular book, pays a great deal of attention to the dust-jacket blurbs anyway, or to the paid celebrities who endorse new books. I personally hold off buying any new book, be it a blockbuster work of fiction or the latest Bible translation, until the ink has been given several years to dry. After the ink has dried and all the dust and hub-bub have settled, one can usually appraise with clearer vision and broader perspective the merits of the work. Besides, it's better to wait for the revision. Publishers and translators of Bibles hardly ever "get it right" the first time and almost invariably hit us with a second edition that they call, variously, updates or revisions. ....... And as Steve (srbaegon) has sensibly pointed out, and with whom I concur, this craze to produce a tailor-made Bible for every conceivable sub-culture of our society is ridiculous. ...... But, now, there is another side of the coin to look at. How blessed in America we are to have the "problem" of picking and choosing from so large a selection of good translations. In some climes the folks yearn so much for just any Bible in any format at all that's printed in the language they can understand. How these precious souls would like to have our "problem"! --Hank |
