NASB | Mark 8:34 ¶ And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Mark 8:34 ¶ Jesus called the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]. |
Subject: deny himself, and take up his cross |
Bible Note: Dear Searcher, Yes, I understand the meaning behind those verses. [Just being honest with myself here] To answer to the affirmative [for me at least] would be rather subjective -the spirit being willing but the flesh being weak- and since I don't really know how I would react if that opportunity should arise. Though I only hope and pray that the Holy Spirit would be in control at that point, and I would subject myself, by His grace, to His control. The best I can do and, the best I've been able to do, and by His grace alone, is to die a little each day. That being said; am I willing? Yes. John |
