Bible Question:
I have been searching for a solid answer about the Sabbath. I have always worshiped on Sunday. But here is something that I am thinking about. Today we believe in every Commandment but Sabbath worship. Why. Now I have always thought worship on Sunday is the same, but it is not. Sabbath is a time of rest, but for me all my life the only real rest might of been a nap. Today we play every sport, or watch them. We shop, go to movies, play golf, cards, just about everything, but little relates to even thinking about God. Here is my concern, question, Is worship on Sunday morning, or evening, if your church has a evening service, really the same as what done before Jesus died? I know some things like no cooking was a man made, but the way most of us do is not a day of rest, but a day off to do as we see fit, after Sunday worship. In my mind something is just not right. Is anyone else thinking like me? just me |
Bible Answer: Mark 2:27-28 (NASB) 27 Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 "So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." The Sabbath according to Jesus was made for man. That carries a significant meaning. Did God want man to rest, or to worship or was there something else involved? I believe there was something else. God created the Sabbath to show man the need for rest, physical but more importantly spiritual rest. It was constant reminder to man that spiritual rest outside of God was impossible. Jesus fulfilled that spiritual rest for man, he provided us with the promise of eternal life in Him. Now let us go back and look at our practice of Sunday or what many call Sabbath worship. Did God ever tell us only to worship Him one day? Not we are to be constantly in prayer and worshipping God. And in there lies the problem for many of us. God is only thought about or worshipped Sunday morning and that is totally wrong. We are told the ministry gifts are to equip us not to lead us into worship but to do the work of the Lord. Eph 4:11. We have taken Sunday morning worship and turned it into our only worship and we have negated the need to be equipped but instead insisted that we be entertained with good music and eloquent preaching that often times even our thoughts of God. I realize that may be a harsh generalization to some but most surveys today often cite dissatisfaction with the music or preaching to be a major hindrance to Sunday attendance. As for worship we are to be worshipping God all our waking hours, but scripture does admonish us to come together to encourage, edify and exhort each other building ourselves up in the faith. Christians traditionally have chosen Sunday morning as their time of celebration to rejoice in the knowledge that Jesus Christ has risen from the dead on the first day of the week. This day is not to be our only day of worship but it should be a time where we come together to be equipped under the guidance of the ministry gifts to do the work of the Lord. And to rejoice together in the hope of our soon coming Lord. |
