Bible Question: Is it accurate to say that Jesus could "predict the future?" Obviously He knew He was to be crucified and resurrected. Is there any way to know how much He really knew ahead of time? (i.e. everyday things that happened) |
Bible Answer: Hi, Biffbt! In order to define what Jesus knew or did not know we must understand Jesus' purpose. John the Evangelist introduced Him as the WORD (who was at the beginning, who was with God, and who was God)... John the Baptist introduces Him as the Lamb of God (a symbolic sacrificial animal since the Law required sacrificial offerings). Was Jesus God? John the Evangelist says so! Was Jesus man? John the Baptist attest to His future sacrifice for humanity; God cannot die so Jesus most definitely had to be a man! That is part of the mystery! The Jehovah Witnesses want to interpret the Bible as Jesus having the same limitations as mortal man... Some of the passages in the Bible dictate just such assumption! But there are oh so many more that tells us He is God! Did Jesus come to reveal total knowledge? No! His main purpose was to rescue us from death! As the Anointed, Joshua, He could reveal only some things. He Himself attests to this in the book of John when He tells the disciples that there will be another that would come from God, the Paraclete; He, the Paraclete, will reveal and teach everything: He will tell us the things of the Anointed and He will remind us of the Lords Words... Here are some examples of how you can trace Christ's Omniscience: * In the Old Testament Yahweh claimed to know and to be able to search man's heart and soul, ditto with Christ; even the disciples confess: now we know that you know everything! * Jesus tells Peter to drop the fishing net into the water and there would be fish. * Jesus checks the Samaritan woman who professes not to be married... * Jesus tells one of the disciples that He saw him when he was under the tree (apparently the disciple was all alone, with no one in the vicinity)... * Jesus knows that Lazarus will die if He does not heal him but He allows the death of His friend to happen in order to demonstrate that He is the Resurrection! * Jesus tells Peter to get a particular fish which will provide for the tax fees of both Him and Peter. * Jesus tells the disciples to get a particular donkey (with its young) and the animals are found as He told them! * Jesus tells the disciples to secure the upper room for His Supper--it is done! * Jesus responds to the Pharisees, Sadducees and the Masters of the Law in a manner that completely obliterates all of their argument; the writers of the Gospels usually comment that "He knew what was in their hearts" or "He knew what they were thinking..." * Jesus foretells the disciples that they would be despised and mistreated on account of His name; that some would even be put to death, as with Peter... it happened! * Jesus prophesized about the destruction of the Temple--on 70 AD it was destroyed! * Jesus told Peter that not even the gates of hell could destroy the Church... after decades of distortions and anti-Christian movies, a movie made on the Passion of Christ which was prophesized a flop that would not even have a "break even" success made over 200 million dollars in its inauguration week: Christ, the Church, is very much alive! God Bless! Angel |
