Bible Question:
Could you agree with this intepretation? First of all I believe Jesus is God. But I also believe that Jesus came to serve not be served Matthew 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Honestly, My first impression (Mark 10) I would say that Jesus is saying, Why are you calling me God, God is the only one who is Good. Because if you notice, after that the child did not call him Good Teacher..anymore. But to read in harmony with other scripture. Jesus purpose is not to say hello I am God. His purpose is to teach that God is Good. Just as he teaches that God only can save in the next verses Mark 10:26-27 "The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." Saying Through God you are saved. We know Jesus saves..he is our God and Savior Titus 2:13 - "the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" For me, this is an example of how important it is to read and study the bible in context. You read scripture in light of scripture. do you agree? Noveta Your sister in Christ |
Bible Answer: Hi Noveta, When we compare Scripture with Scripture concerning the (g)Good Teacher I think that it will be clear that the stress is on the Teacher and the good things that He taught. Matthew 19 does not have the man calling Jesus "Good" at all; neither in the first or last part of his conversation. Again, it is interesting that some manuscripts have the "(g)Good" and some don't (compare Matthew 19:16, NKJ and NASB); which shows to my mind that all of this had been discussed before and considered by the scribes. To my mind, since the word "good" was omitted it shows that it would not be capitalized or "counted" as a pronoun of Deity. 1) I believe that God is good; just as I believe that God is love. I believe that goodness and lovingkindness are His attributes rather than His Person. Thus, I would say, that Jesus is a good Teacher. Matthew 19 spoke of the "good things that the man should do to obtain eternal life." Mark 10 has the man asking what he should do to inherit eternal life and calls the Teacher good. 2) A point I would like to raise is concerning the pronouns "agreeing". For instance you spoke of Jesus saying, "Why do you call me [sic] God?" My point would be that if Jesus is God, then the pronoun "Me" should be capitalized. Also if Jesus is our God and Savior then the word "He" should be capitalized. There is no strange god among us. Now I realize that all writers and translations do not capitalize pronouns of Deity, but in your mind please remember that He is God. 3) That this Man Jesus Christ is God is pointed out, in my mind at least, by Mark 10:27 and Matthew 19:26. "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." That points out the difference between men and this Man who is God in the likeness of men. From the heart, Ray |
