Bible Question:
What did Jesus mean in these two strange, seemingly almost callous quotes? Gen 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die |
Bible Answer: Hi, Shankara, welcome to the forum... I'm not sure if your reference is to the verses you included from Genesis or the verse you cited in the title of your question from Matthew. Since you ask, "What did Jesus mean" I will assume that it is the latter. You must understand that the man who Jesus was speakng to had not just lost his father to death. This was a common turn of phrase for the Jew. What He was asking was "I'll follow you, but first I need to take care of my father until he passes away." It is quite possible that the father of this man was an unregenerate man. Clearly there wre quite a few relatives who were. The unregenerate are dead already (John 3:18). So, Christ is saying, "What you are to do is follow me now. Let the lost care for the lost in the appropriate way." It is never safe to put off the calling of God to another day. In Him, Doc |
