Bible Question: Why fast and pray? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... "Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it for bowing one's head like a reed and for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed? Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the LORD? (Isa 58:5) ... context God's day to you DL, and welcome to the SBF, Isaiah (Isa 8:3-13) and Jesus (Mat 6:16–18) said we needed the right motives when we fast ... we need to be humble (Psa 35:13) and never do it for show. Nehemiah fasted and prayed when he heard of the plight of Jerusalem ... and may have got cleaned up for awhile. But his king saw his sad heart (Neh 1:2-2:2). David fasted and prayed as his son was dying, pleading for his life (2Sa 12:15-25). Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast before going to battle with the Moabites and Ammonites (2Ch 20:3). The people of Nineveh fasted when Jnah proclaimed the judgment of God (Jon 3:7). Moses (twice) after getting the commandments and he saw the idolatry (Deu 9:7-21) and Jesus in preparation of His ministry (Luk 4:2) fasted for 40 days/nights The Jews of Persia fasted for 3 days before Esther visited King Ahasuerus uninvited (Est 4:16-17). Saul/Paul fasted for 3 days, between his conversion and water baptism (Act 9:9). The church fasted before commissioning Barnabas and Saul for work (Act 13:2). Paul and Barnabus appointed elders with fasting and prayer (Act 14:23). So why do you think people fasted? Searcher |
