NASB | Matthew 5:32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 5:32 but I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on grounds of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who has been divorced commits adultery. [Deut 24:1-4; Luke 16:18] |
Bible Question: I heard an author on a Christian talk show saying that if we divorced and married another that we are committing CONTINUAL ADULTERY and that we won't get into Heaven...but if we divorced our current spouse it may be possible. Is this true? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Dat, Divorce is not something that should never be taken lightly (Matt. 19:6; Mark 10:9). "Continual adultery" is not a phrase that is found in the Bible, even though an example can be found in John 4:16-18. Scripture lists 'adulterers' as among those who will not enter the kingdom of heaven in 1 Cor. 6:9 and Heb 13:4. However, at the same time, adultery is not the 'unforgiveable sin' (Matt. 12:31-32), and is something that our Lord can forgive, if forgiveness is truly sought (John 8:11). Blessings to you, Makarios |
