Bible Question:
Matt 5.27 Adultery 27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'[5] 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. What did Jesus really mean by Remove your eye, cut off your hand,no one will do it. |
Bible Answer: Hyperbole was a rhetorical device of exaggeration used to drive home the point and seriousness of a teaching in Jewish culture. It is not to be taken literally, but is meant to underline the seriousness of a teaching, in this case that it is better to deprive yourself of sinful temporal pleasure than to suffer the loss of eternal life by sin. |
