Subject: Things Jesus Never Taught |
Bible Note: Things Jesus Never Taught [The items listed below are not necessarily sinful or bad. My only point here is that Jesus himself never specifically taught any of the following.] Jesus never taught: 1. Taking communion the first Sunday of every month 2. Committees 3. Passing an offering plate or basket in church 4. Altar calls 5. Lengthy pleas for offerings 6. Holding Sunday services at 10:00 or 10:30 a.m. 7. Signing cards pledging tithes or missionary support 8. Singing three hymns in every Sunday morning service 9. Singing off-the-wall choruses from an overhead projector in church 10. Wearing neckties to church on Sunday morning 11. Holding annual Sunday school picnics 12. Ending every prayer by SAYING "In Jesus Name..." 13. Baptismal fonts inside the church building 14. Church buildings 15. The notion that mankind would have to wait until one 17th century English version appeared before we would ever have the only "inspired" text of the Bible 16. A democratic system of church government in which every member gets to vote 17. Following Roberts' Rules of Orders in church business meetings 18. Church basements or fellowship halls with kitchens 19. Printed programs for church services 20. Salaried church organists, pianists and choir directors Note that I am not necessarily opposed to these things. I am merely asking, Where in the Gospels does Jesus teach such things? Fundamentalists often criticize liturgical or formal churches because of their many traditions. (I am not speaking here of traditions of doctrine, but of traditions of practice within the church.) Yet do not fundamentalist churches hold to certain "traditions" of their own? |
