Bible Question: What's the difference between the role of an apostle and that of an evangelist? |
Bible Answer: The word apostle comes from the Greek, apostolos, meaning "someone sent out", -as with a purpose, such as with a message. The word evangelist comes from the Greek word euangelion which means "the one who delivers the message." The word angel or, 'angelos' is from the same root word and means "messenger" . The intention of most evangelism is to convert those who do not follow Christianity in order to obtain salvation. Evangelists are acting in obedience to the Great Commission, a command from Jesus to his disciples. So while they all have a common purpose or goal, they are actually different. It is like the difference between an apostle and a disciple. While an apostle actually has to be chosen for the task by the one who is doing the sending, such as an ambassador would be, a disciple can make the decision himself to follow in the disciplines of Jesus Christ. Though we may have different talents today as relating to evangelism, we must still make the decision ourselves, without necessarily being chosen for the specific task. Angels on the other hand, are different. They are spiritual beings and we are unable to 'choose' to be an angel. Joyful blessings, keliy |
