Bible Question:
Is 1:18 "Come now let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall become white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." The usual interpretaion of this verse is that the red and crimson refer to the sins of Israel but the white refers to Israel's purification. Has anyone heard a different interpretaion of this passage? Emmaus |
Bible Answer: Greetings Emmaus. I "just happen to be in Is 1 at this time . . . Throughout the old testament, we see a "scarlet thread" woven in Israel's history. And whenever I read the word scarlet or red, I am reminded of the shed blood of Christ which covers our sins. I thought that this verse in Matthew was significant to your post and is worthy of further contemplation. Isn't it interesting that according to the AMP, scarlet was assigned to those who had rank, or standing in the world's eyes?! And although this was done in a mocking manner, little did these Roman soldiers know of the spiritual reality they were participants in. For He who knew no sin became sin for us . . . it is as if Jesus dons our mantel of sin and in exchange, we are given His robe of righteosuness to wear. In Is 1:18, the Lord is inviting Israel to recognize her sinful condition. There is a future tense associated with this verse, which could refer to of the ultimate redemption of the remnant.(Rom 9:27 - "Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "THOUGH THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL BE LIKE THE SAND OF THE SEA, IT IS THE REMNANT THAT WILL BE SAVED;") Personally, I struggle with limiting Is. 1:18 to just Israel, because I believe that the invitation to "confront sin" and God's offer of restoration (Grace through faith in Christ) is available to all.
