Bible Question: Is there any information on the Roman 'flagrum', which is a part of the whip that the Romans used to scourge Jesus? For instance, what did a flagrum (or whip) look like? |
Bible Answer: I was under the impression that the whip was a cat-o-nine-tails. I'm not sure where I got that. I distinctly remember a preacher saying that once, but I think I had heard it somewhere else even before then. If it was a cat-o-nine, then it had several "tails" on it, or strips of leather. In addition, each piece of leather had a small piece of metal attached to the end of it. Websters describes the cat-o-nine as "a whip made of usually nine knotted lines or cords fastened to a handle." Also according to Websters, the whip gets its name from the resemblance of its scars to the scratches of a cat. Where does the word "flagrum" appear in the Bible and in what version? I don't ever recall coming up against this word. |
