Subject: what is the 'it' means in Matt 26:42? |
Bible Note: Jiner::: Jesus is speaking in Matt. 24:42 and in 24:39 of His forthcoming crucifixion. "It" refers to "this cup." In Old Testament Scripture a cup is often the symbol of divine wrath against sin (cf., e.g., Isaiah 51:17-22, Jer. 25:15-17, Hab.2:16). The day after Christ prayed this prayer He would be crucified and the fullness of divine wrath would fall on Him. See Isaiah 53:10,11; 2 Cor. 5:21; Matt. 27:46. --Hank |
