AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 24:3 ¶ While Jesus was seated on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, and said, "Tell us, when will this [destruction of the temple] take place, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end (completion, consummation) of the age?" |

Bible Note: Hi, stj... Jesus was answering a question from His disciples. His answer was, therefore, speaking to them and to their future. First He answers when "these things" (the destruction of the temple) will take place. Then He answers their question regarding the signs that will precede His return, which they rightly associate with the "end of the age." I believe His answers were very explicit. The warnings regarding the imminent afflictions they would face would be for them and the other disciples of that period. The end of the age would refer to things that have not yet occurred. I am persuaded that this is sound exegesis of this passage. People have made lots of money writing books and movies on this topic, but I'm not so very convinced of the correctness -- let alone the details! -- of their hermeneutic. In Him, Doc |
